[SC: 4.79], [PU: London: printed for Jacob Tonson within Grays-Inn Gate next Grays-Inn Lane], POETRY BSTOCK, 8vo, pp. [iv], xxiv, [iv], 328; pagination including engraved frontispiece; a somewhat ordinary copy in contemporary panelled calf, rebacked, new endpapers. Second edition: first published the same year, as an 'official' edition of Prior's poetry, replacing the pirated edition published in 1707 by Edmund Curll. Provenance. Contemporary inscriptions on title of Mary Fane, and Mildmay Fane. The latter must be the Hon. Mildmay Fane (1689-1715), younger son of the 4th Earl of Westmorland, and grandson of the poet and politician, Mildmay Fane, 2nd Earl, after whom he must have been named: he too was an aspiring politician, but he died shortly after being elected to the Commons in 1715. I am not clear who Mary Fane might have been: Mildmay had a sister of that name, but she was already married by the time this book was published.<
