[SC: 11.67], [PU: Midwinter et al, London], BUTLER ZACHARY GREY MYNDE HOGARTH, Hudibras is an English mock heroic narrative poem from the 17th century written by Samuel Butler. With fold out engravings throughout. Three parts bound in two, complete. Corrected and ammended with large annotations and a preface by Zachary Grey, adorn'd with new cuts. With an engraved illustration of the author to the frontispiece and sixteen plates after Hogarth engraved by J. Mynde throughout and with a list of subscribers to front of volume one. The work is a satirical polemic upon Roundheads, Puritans, Presbyterians and many of the other factions involved in the English Civil War. The work was begun, according to the title page, during the civil war and published in three parts in 1663, 1664 and 1678, with the first edition encompassing all three parts in 1684. Previous owner's bookplates to front endpapers. In morocco bindings. Externally, generally smart with just slight wear to extremities and marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and generally clean throughout but with slight foxing to plates and marginally to surrounding pages. Very Good Indeed<
