You may see this volume bundled (even in upscale auction houses such as Bauman's) as volume one of four volumes, but that is an anachronism! Pope gambled on an audacious move in 1717 by publishing his ¿Collected Works¿ at the raw young age of 29. He was already a significant force in the English literary world, but, just as today, only venerated masters at the ends of their careers published ¿Collected Works.¿ Pope broke that mold in 1717, but there was no volume 2 or 3 or 4 because he had written nothing else at that point! Nothing! It was a marketing ploy that worked beautifully for him. He was regarded from that year onward as an author with classic status. Several new works were published here for the first time, including ¿Eloisa to Abelard,¿ and ¿Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady.¿ Truly a landmark volume in the history of literature and publishing. Very good minus condition: wear/rubbing to edges of binding and outer joints with a little leather missing at corners; light scratches on boards; joints beginning to tear at top of spine, about 2" on the back and 1/2" on the front; marbling is dull/faded; hinges strong; endpapers in excellent condition; slight bleeding of the marbling paint to the edges of some of the front matter; frontispiece has a long tear with tape on the back side; a bit of curl to an edge; pages are in excellent condition.
