Henri Bolkonsky, a former resistance fighter, Special Operations Executive (SOE) and MI-6 agent, is picked up in Munich under his alias, Heinrich von Spieldau, and is falsely accused of war crimes. He is incarcerated in Landsberg prison, near Nuremberg, where the Schutzstaffel (SS) accused of war crimes are held awaiting trial. Henri's uncle, Paul Bolkonsky, hears from Bob Herring of American intelligence, a friend of Henri's, that a group known as Die Deautchegemeinshaft, a.k.a. The Brotherhood, has sent its assassination squad - Das Spinne - to kill Henri. Paul tried to contact Henri in Munich, not knowing he has been picked up by the American Military Police. Two friends of Henri's, Karl Sculler and Johann Martin, who are now with British intelligence, arrive at the Bolkonsky Schloss in Bavaria. They join forces with Paul, his son Alexei, and Igor, Henri's major domo/bodyguard. The five men meet Bob Herring and Jim Stevens in Munich to look for Henri. The group fans out over the American sector of Germany looking for him. Henri escapes Landsberg only to be recaptured. He stands trial and is sentenced to hang.
