Schon die aus heutiger Sicht vergleichsweise simpel erscheinende Einfhrung der Telegrafie in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts und die Verlegung des ersten transkontinentalen Kabels 1866 vernderte die allgemeine Wahrnehmung der Welt und der Distanzen in ihr, vom Telefon und der akustischen Sprachbermittlung ber Distanzen ganz zu schweigen. Technische Neuerungen machen diese Entwicklungen mglich, hnliche Effekte auf die Wahrnehmung der Welt hatten natrlich auch die neuen Transportmittel von der Eisenbahn bis zum Zeppelin. Genau ein solcher Prozess wird schon, dank Gutenbergs Druckerpresse, in der Frhen Neuzeit mit der Entstehung gedruckter, regelmig erscheinender Zeitungen in Gang gesetzt. Die Zeitung ist das erste Kommunikationsmedium, welches auf breiter gesellschaftlicher Ebene einen nachhaltigen Effekt auf die Menschen und ihre Wahrnehmung der Welt hat und dadurch Entwicklungen in Gang setzt, die wir noch heute spren.
