Fox, Nada Mourtada Sabbah, and Mohammed Al Mutawa, American University of Sharjah and UAE University Globalization and the Gulf describes and explains how the strategically situated societies along the Arabian Gulf, in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman, have embraced the forces of globalization transforming the world into a single market, albeit on their own terms. While aspects of the Arab world have resisted certain dimensions of globalization, the Gulf societies have by and large welcomed the technological and material aspects of globalization with enthusiasm small traditional towns of mud-walled communities have been transformed into to ultra-modern cityscapes within one short generation. However, despite the familiar "Westernesque" skylines and immaculate physical infrastructure, this is not business as usual where the quest for profits in the most efficient ways dictates business and governmental policy and practice. The local leaders and the now Western educated younger generation of family scions manage the society and have moulded an almost unique lifestyle that blends traditional values and attitudes with modern business savvy. While the West has demonstrated a rather poor track record in understanding the Arab world in general, the strategic flow of the world's oil pipeline through these six Gulf countries necessitates a more informed understanding of the workings, meanings, and unique transformations of Gulf society. Globalization and the Gulf seeks to provide this understanding and includes an analysis of how Arab society and the forces of globalization in economy, ideas and lifestyle have created a unique synthesis of local and global. The contributions in this volume are from leading international scholars that offer a unique insight into the societies of the Arabian Gulf, making this an invaluable volume for those with interests in Middle East politics, political economy, sociology, anthropology, and International Relations. John W. Fox is Professor of Anthropology at the American University of Sharjah. Nada Mourtada-Sabbah is Associate Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department of International Studies at the American University Sharjah. Mohammed al-Mutawa is Associate Professor of Sociology at the United Arab Emirates University. Middle East Politics/International Relations/Anthropology/Sociology For centuries, the Arabian Gulf has been a crossroads where seafaring people and Bedouins alike travelled great distances transacting business. Events of the past few years, both good and bad, have directed the worlds attention to the Arabian Peninsula, where a rich cultural tradition is rapidly incorporating the latest innovations from around the world. This is the process of globalization. New economies create enormous potential, but it will require great care for the people of the region to steer through a period of profound change. Political and economic interests intent on maintaining the flow of petroleum products on one hand, and people in the Gulf region who assess their won interests from quite a different perspective, on the other, exert pressures from conflicting directions. Reconciling these interests in a time of rapid globalization poses enormous challenges. This timely volume brings together the work of scholars from both the Middle East and the West who have the expertise to evaluate the interaction of new ideas, new technologies and new economies. Brought together by the American University of Sharjah and the Sociological Association of the UAE, the contributors reflect on both the process of globalism and on the traditions of Gulf society and culture, and they offer views on how these trends interact within the global system. This timely volume brings together the work of scholars from both the Middle East and the West who reflect on both the process of globalism and on the traditions of Gulf society and culture, and discuss how these trends interact within the global system. 2 b/w Illus., 2 b/w Line drawings, 12 b/w Tables - 234 x 156 mm Versandfertig in 2-4 Wochen, DE, [SC: 0.00], Neuware, gewerbliches Angebot, offene Rechnung (Vorkasse vorbehalten)
