Her innovative, daring, yet elegantly restrained jewellery has captivated people across the world. Torun's jewellery was a great success in 1950s and 1960s Paris. The Parisian cafes were the place for that era's celebrated intellectuals Sartre, Picasso, Bardot, Ingrid Bergman  Torun met them all, while writers and jazz musicians became her friends, and all the artistic and creative world wanted her creations. Newspapers and magazines competed for the chance to photograph the stunning silversmith wearing her own jewellery.  In 1967 Torun entered into partnership with Georg Jensen Silver, and her jewellery became accessible and known all over the world a collaboration now spanning more than 50 years.  Torun's jewellery remains timelessly modern. But who was she? Here, in intimate conversation with her friend and confidant, author Ann Westin, she reveals her life story and the driving forces behind her lifelong creative work.  Ann Westin is and art historian and well-known former gallery owner and has been at the centre of the Swedish art world and Stockholm art scene for over 50 years. She served as a member of the Board of Friends of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm 2013 2021 and is currently member of the board of a number of art and music institutions. She has been an admirer of Torun's work since the late 1950s and a close friend of the artist since the 1990s.  She is the author of several articles and forewords in Swedish publications. This book radically re-conceptualises the origins of the European Union as a trans- and supranational polity as it emerged between the Schuman Plan of May 1950 and the first enlargement of the European Communities at the start of 1973. Drawing upon social science theories and debates as well as recent historical research, Wolfram Kaiser and Morten Rasmussen in their introductory chapters discuss innovative ways of narrating the history of the EU as the emergence of a transnational political society and supranational political system. Building on these insights, eight chapters based on multilateral and multi-archival research follow each with case studies of transnational networks, public sphere and institutional cultures and policy-making which illustrate systematically related aspects of the early history of the EU. In the concluding chapter, leading political scientist Alex Warleigh-Lack demonstrates how greater interdisciplinary cooperation, especially between contemporary history and political studies, can significantly advance our knowledge of the EU as a complex polity.
