Pliny´s letters offer a significant source of information about the lives of Roman women, mainly, though not exclusively, upper-class, during the late first and early second centuries CE. Pliny mentions over 30 women by name, addresses letters to six women, and refers to well over 40 other women. This book has two aims. The first is to bring some of these women to the foreground, to examine their activities and relationships, to give them biographies, and to investigate their social and cultural environment so that we can gain a better understanding not only of their lives, but also of Roman society more generally. The second aim is to use the information provided by Pliny to acquire a better understanding of what behavior was admired in Roman women of this period, and to investigate how the concept of the model Roman woman is constructed in Pliny and elsewhere in Roman literature and in inscriptions.
