Ein Junitag im Londoner Botanischen Garten: In allen Farben leuchtet ein Blumenbeet. Paare spazieren daran vorbei, der Wind trägt Gesprächsfetzen weiter, Stichworte für imaginierte Lebensläufe, die gleich wieder weggeweht sind. Von der Schriftstellerin wie mit dem Blick des Malers eingefangene Impressionen hat die Malerin mit schwungvollen Pinseldekorationen umrahmt, illustriert, durchflochten. Kew Gardens, vermutlich 1917 entstanden, ist eines der kurzen Prosastücke, die für Virginia Woolfs künstlerische Entwicklung von besonderer Bedeutung sind. Hier hat sie zum ersten Mal mit der neuen, eigenen Erzählweise experimentiert, die sie mit Jacobs Zimmerauch bald an einem Roman erprobte. Damit war sie auf dem Weg zu ihren großen Romanen Mrs Dalloway, Zum Leuchtturm, Die Wellen. Die Erzählung erschien zuerst 1919 bei dem von Leonard und Virginia Woolf gegründeten Verlag 'The Hogarth Press'. 1927 kam dort die bibliophile Ausgabe in 500 numerierten Exemplaren heraus, von Hand gesetzt und von Vanessa Bell dekoriert, die jetzt als Reprint erscheint. Die deutsche Übersetzung sowie ein Begleittext von Klaus Reichert, dem Herausgeber der Gesammelten Werkevon Virginia Woolf, sind in einem Beiheft enthalten.
