Preserved in a morocco backed cloth box case. A fine copy of the true first edition complete with the rare half title and excessively rare final leaf of advertisements. For this work only the presence of the half title without notice of reprinting can determine a genuine first edition. Todd has contributed a useful note on the bibliography of this work in The Book Collector (Summer 1956, pp. 172-3 - facsimile included). With the armorial bookplate of William St. Quintin [5th Baronet of Harpham] and Robert Hesketh. The central focus of The Critic is the play-within-a-play rehearsal of "The Spanish Armada", and the discussion of it by its Puff and the two critics Dangle and Sneer.
