'Rowning's interest in mechanical matters led him to devise an expanded-scale barometer, achieved by floating the tube and cistern in a liquid, with a protruding vertical rod acting as a pointer. With changing pressure, both mercury and liquid levels changed, the overall rise and fall being greater than that of the mercury alone. Though ingenious, the device was impractical, and the theory more complicated than Rowning suspected; it was, however, published in the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions (38, 1733, 39–42). His chief work was his Compendious System of Natural Philosophy (2 vols.), which went through seven editions between 1735 and 1772' (ODNB). 'One of the most popular texts throughout the eighteenth century . used at Cambridge and Oxford, at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, at many dissenting academies, and by John Wesley for his itinerant preachers . Chiefly distinguished for its clarity, the work should also be nioted for itsexplicit rejection of Newtonian ether . and its proposal of alternating spheres of attraction abnd repulsion some tweny years before Boškovic' (DSB). Each part has its own title-page, and they bear varying dates and edition statements (the general title having no edition statement). Part I is Firfth edition, with additions, 1752; Part II, fifth edition, 1751; Part III does not have a title-page, but the continuation of it in vol. ii does, second edition, 1743; Part IV has no edition statement, and is dated 1742.<
