Printed: 1697 1569-1626 Octavo , First Tate Edition A8,b8,B-H8 Bound in full early calf , it is a nice copy with spine label Sir John Davies (not to be confused with John Davies of Hereford) was a man of the same pattern, though without lord Brooke's memory of "the spacious days" and without his deep austerity He, too, was a man of affairs, and rose to a high position in the state His life, however, had not the same great beginning, and his was no smooth passage to fame Born in 1569, at Tisbury in Wiltshire, he went to Winchester and Oxford (partly, it appears, resident at New college, partly at Queen's college), and, like the majority of young men of the time, came, in 1587, to study law in London But he quarrelled with the frend to whom he had dedicated his Orchestra, Richard Martin, and, entering the hall, armed with a dagger, he broke his cudgel over Martin's head, who was eating dinner at the barristers' table In consequence of this outrage on the benchers, he was disbarred For an orphan, with his way to make, the calamity was heavy He returned to Oxford in 1598, three years after he had been called, and wrote his great poem Nosce Teipsum Lord Mountjoy, afterwards earl of Devonshire, approved of it so highly that he advised Davies to publish it, with a dedicatory poem to the queen This, Davies was not slow to do The poem appeared the year after his expulsion from the bar, and added largely to his growing reputation as a poet The Hymns to Astroea appeared in the same year, and Davies's services were in request to write words for "entertainments" offered to her majesty A Dialogue between a Gentleman Usher and a Poet, A contention betwixt a Wife, a Widdow and a Maide and A Lottery, are the names of those that are extant A Lottery gained the queen's acknowledgment, and, through the influence of lord Ellesmere, Davies, after a formal apology to the benchers and to Richard Martin, was reinstated at the bar in 1601 His career now began He was among those who went with lord Hunsdon to escort king James to the English throne, and James was sufficiently impressed with him to appoint him solicitor-general for Ireland, under lord Mountjoy, then lord deputy In December, 1603, on his arrival in Dublin, he was knighted, and, some years later, he married the daughter of lord Audley One of his children was the famous countess of Huntingdon His work in Ireland, where he remained until 1619, was distinguished, and how deeply he was interested in Irish affairs may be gathered from his Discourse of the true reasons why Ireland has never been intirely subdued till the beginning of His Majesty's reign In 1619, he resumed his seat in the House of Commons as member for Newcastle under Lyme, to which he had been elected in 1614, and, just before he could assume the office of chief justice, to which he had been appointed in 1626, he died suddenly of an apoplexy 28 Orchestra or a Poeme on Dauncing was written before June, 1594, although it was not published until 1596 The poem is in the form of a dialogue between Penelope and one of her suitors, and consists of 131 stanzas of seven lines, each riming ababbcc In the dedicatory sonnet to "his very friend MA Richard Martin," which, in spite of the reconciliation, was omitted from the edition of 1622, Davies describes the poem as "this suddaine, rash half-capreol of my wit," and reminds Martin how it was written in fifteen days The fact is worthy of attention because it shows the writer's ability and mastery over his material The poem bears no sign of haste in the making Gallant and gay, it flows with transparent clearness to its conclusion, and the verse has the happy ease which marks all the work of Davies, and makes it comparable with the music of Mozart 29 His next work Nosce Teipsum possesses the same fluidity of thought and diction, which is the more remarkable as the poem is deeply philosophical The sub-title explains the subject: "This oracle expounded in two elegies 1 Of Human knowledge 2 Of the Soule of Man and the immortalitie thereof" The first edition was published in 1599, the second, "newly corrected and amended," in 1602, the third in 1608, and, of course, the poem was included in the collected edition which Davies himself made of his poems in 1622 30 "Wouldst thou be crowned the Monarch of a little world? command thyself," wrote Francis Quarles, who was certainly well-acquainted with Nosce Teipsum, in the second century of his Enchiridion, and that sentence gives the gist of the first part of the poem on Humane Knowledge Davies then passes on to examine the nature of the soul, its attributes and its connection with the body; and, having defined with exactness what he means by the soul, proceeds to prove its immortality by means of arguments for and against his proposition Proof in such a matter is not possible; but a personal answer to the great question, so sincerely thought and so lucidly expressed as is this answer of Davies, will always have its value Nor is Nosce Teipsum a treatise which ingenuity has fashioned into verse and which more properly would be expressed in plain prose Davies does not, as it were, embroider his theme with verse, but uses verse, and its beauties of line and metaphor, to make his meaning more clear, and, thereby, gallantly justifies the employment of his medium This mastery of his is enviously complete; but, perhaps, it is most conspicuous in the Hymns to Astroea which were first published in 1599 As the title-page announces, they are written "in Acrosticke verse" They are twenty-six in number: each poem is of three stanzas (two of five lines, one of six lines), and each line begins with a different letter of the name Elizabetha Regina Yet, in spite of this fantastic formality, not a line is forced, and one or two of the poems, notably hymn v, To the Lark, Earley, cheerfule, mounting Larke, Light's gentle usher, Morning's clark, are exquisite songs ., William Rogers, 1697, 0, CAIRO KHARTOUM DURBAN SOUTH AFRICA EAST AFRICA. Good. 1940. On offer is a short and fascinating travel journey through East Africa, undertaken in the 1940s. It is a detailed, account of four Englishmen (John James, Peter Dawson, Harry Davies, and the unnamed author) and two Ethiopian servants (brothers, named Datchee and Bouwee) who take a journey from Cairo, Egypt to Durban, South Africa, travelling by horseback, punts, canoes, and aeroplane. Chances are that the trip was undertaken during the second half of the 1940s, as there is no mention of the war that consumed the world in the first half of the decade. The first page of the book contains an index, which shows that the diary consists of six chapters: 1- Preparation for the journey; 2 - From Cairo to Wadi; 3 - From Wadi to Khartoum; 4 - From Khartoum to Lake Rudolf; 5 - Through the jungle; 6 - Back to the world. The index also shows on which page in the book these chapters begin. The first chapter begins: “John James, Peter Dawson, Harry Davies and myself had been working on the Persian oil field for six years and we wanted a holiday. Peter Dawson proposed to go on a travel holiday from Cairo to the Zambesi and we all agreed. We set off by boat on May 16th and arrived at Cairo on May 17th.” The preparation for the journey consists of their trouble in finding ‘suitable servants’ in Cairo. They eventually find Datchee and Bouwee. They also buy their tents, sheets, and other assorted travelling gear. “It had taken us five days to get everything ready but we had enjoyed every one of them. We went to our hotel for the last night for in the morning we were going to start our journey.” The second chapter consists of their travel to Wadi, in what is now Sudan. They cross through Giza, travel on a punt down the Nile river, where they meet and exchange food with ‘the natives.’ They travel down the Nile for a few days, having great difficulty crossing the Aswan Low Dam, having to carry their punts quite a while to come to the other side. In Wadi, they get in touch “with a British officer who warned us of the hard work that was coming & entreated us to trek across land but we decided to carry on as we were. We started out from Wadi alright but soon `struck’ the second cataract. Here the punts had to be carried round & the provision boat unloaded. This was a great waste of time & we were able to sail fifteen miles that day.” It takes twenty days to reach Khartoum. “One day we had quite a thrill when a hungry lion stepped in our path. We quickly got our rifles, all had a shot & all missed. This made the lion more furious & had not Jack intervened and shot it through the heart we should not have been alive to tell the tale. We each took some of its skin as a memento.” They rest for three days in Khartoum. And from there they abandon their boats, and begin the trek to Lake Rudolf. They follow a caravan route along the Blue Nile. the author’s friend John James sprains his ankle but they “managed to find a French doctor who rubbed it with oils and bandaged it up tightly.” Going forward, “our greatest handicap...was the tributaries that had to be crossed.” “Not long after we were over the first tributary, we encountered linos. But horses had been trained for this and when they say the lions they laid down that for us to shoot over them. One lion dashed at Tommy and we all shot at it. We killed it all right but it fell on Tommy’s back legs and were three hours before we could get it off.” When they reach Lake Rudolf, the author writes, “our first job was to make friends with the natives which we easily did by giving them a few beads. We were very fortunate in being able to speak to them through Bouwee and Datchee…. Bouwee and Datchee asked them to make us six canoes and one raft for the horses and the food. They all worked like horses for the next few days, and at last got them finished. Three of them came with us to propel the raft.” Crossing Lake Rudolf proves difficult especially at night. “We had a watch as usual but had a very uncomfortable night. Frequently during the night we were awakened by shots from the rifles which had to be fired to scare some animals that were coming too near the camp. They cross the lake in twenty days and reach Port Victoria and continue on foot through the jungle of present-day Tanzania. “We arrived at the source of the Luangwa [River] thirty days after we had set out from Mwanza and decided to make that our destination...” On their journey ‘back to the world’ they decide to sell their horses and return by boat, through rivers and tributaries, back to Cairo. They sell the horses to an English missionary. “It was very good going on the river. WE were sailing with the current and with wind at our backs. In this manner were able to do forty miles per day.” They then part with their trusted partners. “It took us nine days to reach Chinde where we had to part with Bouwee & Datchee. We offered them five pounds each but they would not take it, all they wanted was the canoes which we gladly gave them and said goodbye. We waited a day at Chinde for a boat to Durban. At Durban we took an aeroplane to Khartoum where we reclaimed the punts and sailed down the river. We visited the Pyramids and then returned to work.” The cover of the book is a light brown patterned paper. It is in good condition, showing very little age or wear. The author’s handwriting is in an easily legible script written in black ink. The author of the diary is not stated. No precise dates provided but the trip took several months. In a brown cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. The scarce first edition of this valuable account of Campbell's voyage to Japan and China, with much useful information on Hawaii and Alaska. While in China, Campbell joined the crew of the American ship Eclipse, sailing out of Boston and captained by Joseph O'Cain (called "O'Kean" in the text here). He departed China and went on to Japan and Kamchatka, and thence to Alaska, where the Eclipse was shipwrecked in 1807. Campbell gives an important and early description of Alaska. He wintered at the Russian base at Kodiak in 1808, where he met Baranov, who happened to be there at the time, and gives a valuable description of life on Kodiak. After his shipwreck on Kodiak, both of Campbell's feet froze, and they were eventually amputated. "Campbell's description of Kodiak is particularly valuable" - Lada Mocarski. After the amputation Campbell was sent to Hawaii to rehabilitate and became friendly with King Kamehameha I, for whom he made sails. "Campbell's account of his stay in Hawaii...is of the greatest importance, being the first narrative from the viewpoint of a resident rather than as a visitor....The author lived among the chiefs and then with Isaac Davis, and he identifies some of the earliest foreign residents of the islands, a number of whom were Botany Bay men. His keen firsthand observations on the social structure and agricultural practices of Hawaiians are of great importance" - Forbes. A twenty-five-page appendix contains a Hawaiian vocabulary, and an additional three pages contain Hawaiian phrases useful to seamen. The map is a rather detailed chart of the Northwest Coast, showing the "Track of the Eclipse's Long Boat from Sannack to Kodiak 1807." After his time in Hawaii, Campbell spent two years in various businesses in Rio de Janeiro, also discussed in this narrative.
