South Uist, one of the outer Hebrides lies around 60 miles west of mainland Scotland and at the time in question was not only extremely difficult to reach but had a population just short of 6,000 of whom 60% were monolingual in Gaelic with most of the remainder bilingual in Gaelic and English. Rea was one of the very few on the island who spoke only English having made the dramatic shift from inner city, Birmingham in his case, to rural remoteness. Despite this and despite never learning Gaelic he appears to have become well-regarded and loved by his pupils and their families, perhaps on account of his dedication to the community, his adaptability, and his sympathetic understanding of his pupils' lives and of the value that education could bring (not, of course, in the modern and generally meretricious sense as a means to an economic end but in the proper sense of enlarging and enriching lives)., 2.75<
