Spine and front panel of dustwrapper bright. ***192 pages. 192mm x 132mm. ***'It may have occurred to the reader that our contemporary civilisation would present itself as a puzzling and ridiculously illogical structure to a stranger who saw it for the first time. To John Francis Bray, who wrote this book just over one hundred years ago, the world of his time was such a colossal hotch-potch of injustice, hypocrisy and superstition that he was moved to depict it through the eyes of his imaginary visitor from Utopia. ***Bray, who was born in America, was the eldest son of a comedian and singer, who had emigrated to that country from Leeds in 1805. At the age of eleven he accompanied his father on a trip to England, a trip from which he was not to return to the U.S.A. for a long time, since two days after their arrival in Leeds his father died, and the boy came under the care of an aunt. ***On completion of his schooling, and apprenticeship to a printer, preceded a spell of hard times when he tramped the roads of Britain as an itinerant craftsman. His experience during these years led him to an earnest study of social problems, and he became one of the founder members of the Leeds Working Men's Association. ***Labour's wrongs and Labour's Remedy, written during this period, was one of the pioneering works of early English socialism. Marx himself described it as "this remarkable work", and quoted from it at length in his Poverty of Philosophy. It was however, criticised in certain quarters as being too Utopian. Bray's answer to his critics was the present volume which, he asserted, would show what happened outside Utopia. ***He eventually returned to America in 1842, taking the manuscript with him. Although he devoted the rest of his life to writing and speaking on behalf of the American Labour movement, a Voyage from Utopia remained unpublished, for he felt that any such attempt would have met with strong opposition since his allusions to the social order of his day were too pointed to escape condemnation. ***After his death the manuscript was lost, and only came to light in Michigan in 1937 through the untiring research of Miss Agnes Inglis, whose discovery of a considerable amount of material at his last residence in Pontiac made possible the building-up of a more complete picture of the life of John Francis Bray, and a fuller evaluation of his contribution to social theory.'
