George Fairfield's interest in nature and wild places began when he was a young boy living in Toronto. In those days, there were some fascinating wild places in Toronto not far from busy thoroughfares and suburbs. George knew most of them.

A diarist even at that tender age, the author honed his observational skills and recorded what he saw patiently and carefully. Excerpts of this diary, which George continued to keep over the years, are included throughout Wild Place in Canada and speak with freshness and immediacy of days gone past and people and places that are no more.

When the author entered teh adult world and found employment, first in the logging industry and later working for Ontario Hydro, he always found time to record his experiences and thoughts. He became an avid "birder" and recorded his sightings of the birds he came across in his travels. In later years, he had more time for this activity and led groups on canoe trips into the wilds.

This is an enjoyable journey worth taking at any age.
