The first folio edition of Alexander Pope's translation. Complete in six volumes. Alexander Pope's important translation of Homer's 'Iliad'. 'The Iliad' is an Ancient Greek epic poem, set during the Trojan War, and narrating the ten-year siege, battles, and significant events, written in brilliantly vivid detail. 'Iliad' is divided into twenty-four books, and is written in dactylic hexameter, believed to have been written in around the 8th century BC. The poem is typically attributed to Homer, and there are many legends surrounding his life. Historians have debated for centuries who Homer was, and whether he really wrote both 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey', two of the most famous epic poems from Ancient Greece. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, two plates, and one folding map. Volume II is illustrated with one folding map. Volume V is illustrated with one folding plate. Half-title present to Volume I. Eight pages of the list of subscribers to Volume I, subscribes including the future Queen of England, Caroline of Ansbach, and others, such as the Duke of Devonshire, Lord Cowper, Duke of Marlborough, Sir Isaac Newton, ten sets of the colleges at Oxford, and more. In a full mottled calf binding, smartly rebacked. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the extremities. Spine labels are a little rubbed. A few very light marks to the boards. Small patch of loss of leather to the rear joint of Volume II, and to the tail of the front board of Volume VI. Evidence of former wear to the boards prior to rebacking. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with only the occasional spot, mostly to the endpapers. Tidemark to the gutter of Volumes I, II, and III to the tail of the pages, heavier to the first half of the text in each volume. Ink to the head of the title page of Volume I. Small tear to the dedication leaf of Volume I. Worming to the tail of the textblock of Volume III, from the front paste down to page 118, never touching the text. First Edition. Illustrated. Folios. Eleven volumes. Bound in early 18th-century calf, gilt spines; with all eleven black morocco volume labels present; title labels absent. Illustrations include the full-page engraved frontispiece portrait of Homer by George Vertue; 2 leaves of engraved antiquities; double-page map of Homeric Greece and Phrygia; full-page engraving of the Shield of Achilles; and the very rare second frontispiece of Homer which begins The Odyssey. The second volume of The Iliad lacks the plan of the plain of Troy. A very rare example of the folio Odysseywith thefrontispiece portrait. It is undoubtedly the folio issue, with gatherings of two leaves only and with the illustrations as called for in the folio issue; however, the dimensions of the volumes correspond to those of the quarto issue. It may be that this folio edition was printed on leaves in quarto, or it may be that the leaves have been trimmed in accordance with the preference of the original owner to approximate a large quarto size. Certainly, the bindings cannot date from much later than 1726. It is also possible that the original owner, having compiled the folio set, with the intention of having it bound in its present format, acquired separately a copy of the Odyssey frontispiece and had it included when the set was boundWith the exception of the plan of the plain of Troy, as noted above, the eleven volumes are complete in all respects. Edges and corners show only very minor wear; leather upon the hinges is in general lightly cracked, in several cases only very lightly, which is unusual for 18th century calf bindings.
