Near Fine, [SC: 38.38], [PU: Van Nostrand, Princeton], Jacket, 398 pages. 8vo, two-toned black and yellow cloth, yellow printed d.w. (very minor edgewear and fading). Princeton: D. Van Nostrand, (1964). First edition. A near fine copy -- bright and clean -- in a near fine un-clipped dust wrapper. "Hazlitt's major philosophical work, in which he grounds a policy of private property and free markets in an ethic of classical utilitarianism . In writing this book, Hazlitt is reviving an 18th and 19th century tradition in which economists wrote not only about strictly economic issues but also on the relationship between economics and the good of society in general . Hazlitt favors an ethic that seeks the long run general happiness and flourishing of all. Action, institutions, rules, principles, customs, ideals, and all the rest stand or fall according to the test of whether they permit people to live together peaceably to their mutual advantage. Critical here is an understanding of the core classical liberal claim that the interests of the individual and that of society in general are not antagonistic but wholly compatible and co-determinous . His attacks on logical positivism, socialism, aestheticism, and egalitarianism are dazzling . Hazlitt personally regarded it as his most important lifetime contribution." -- Mises Institute<

Nash Publishing, 1972. Trade Paperback. Good. 1972 Printing by Nash Publishing. Ex-library with usual marks. No marks noted in text. Binding is sound. PAper wrap covers have been cardboard reinforced. . . . . . . This book is a classic text on the philosophy of morality. It covers many of the theories surrounding the subject in an easy, readable prose style that make it accessible to almost anyone with an interest in this highly fascinating subject. The book also touches on economics (ie, the ethics of capitalism and socialism), religion (ie, the ethics of the old and new testament) as well as free will and determinism. All in all, this is a very good book and it makes a good companion to John Hospers book: Human Conduct. The interesting thing about this book is that Henry Hazlitt was more of an economist than philosopher; but this book shows him to be an excellent thinker and writer in both disciplines. I would highly recommend this book to others who are interested in the arguments surrounding morality and the philosophical foundations that underpin such positions. It is certainly a fascinating read. -- Gazza Family-owned bookshop in Steubenville, Ohio: BookMarx Bookstore. Books shipped within 24 hours., Nash Publishing, 1972, 2.5<
