Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) est, avec John Constable, son contemporain, le plus grand peintre anglais du XIXe siècle. Fils d'un barbier-perruquier londonien, il s'illustre d'abord par ses aquarelles de paysages qui lui valent bientôt une solide réputation et la protection de riches mécènes. A 26 ans, il est le plus jeune artiste jamais élu à la Royal Academy. Commence alors une longue et prolifique carrière. Admirateur des grands paysagistes anglais et hollandais mais aussi des peintres français du XVIIe siècle, Poussin et le Lorrain, il travaille à des compositions à l'huile plus ambitieuses où une nature poétisée aux lumières vaporeuses sert de cadre à des épisodes mythologiques ou historiques. Son goût du sublime le conduit bientôt à privilégier dans la nature ses aspects dramatiques ou les plus grandioses : coucher de soleil, reliefs abrupts, avalanche, tempête, incendie lui permettent de déployer toutes les ressources de son art. Carnet de croquis en main, il n'aura de cesse de parcourir la Grande-Bretagne, mais aussi l'Europe, des Alpes aux rives du Rhin, de Calais à Rome, de Nantes à Venise en quête d'émotions visuelles propres à nourrir ses recherches picturales. Sous son pinceau, les miroitements à la surface de l'eau, le ciel et ses infinies variations deviennent le motif d'innombrables études. II échappe peu à peu aux traditions académiques, ses réflexions sur la composition et la couleur le conduisant à l'invention de formes radicalement nouvelles. Sa peinture capte désormais des impressions, des atmosphères fugitives, jouant d'une palette claire et lumineuse, où les formes perdent leurs contours, où les figures se font évanescentes. Cet embrasement progressif donne à ses sujets une dimension onirique et fantastique dont ses contemporains ne saisiront pas la portée visionnaire, à l'exception notable de John Ruskin qui, dès 1840, le hisse au panthéon des artistes anglais.
