Being Chiefly Verses Which Have Been Already Published Under the Nom-De-Plume of "Oriel" in The Argus, and Which are now Republished by the Kind Permission of the Proprieters of that Journal. Illustrated with Photographs and Drawings by Lionel J. Jones John Sandes (1863 - 1938) was an Irish born Australian journalist and author. Sandes moved to Melbourne in 1887 and joined the staff of The Argus, for which he was a musical and dramatic critic. Sandes, with E. T. Fricker and D. Symmons, were the original three journalists who conducted the "Passing Show" column by 'Oriel', a feature of the paper carried on by generations of writers for more than 50 years. A collection of Sandes' verses from this column, Rhymes of the Times (1898), was published, and in 1900 appeared another collection, Ballads of Battle. Sandes stated "When Symmons left the Argus and Fricker took up other work, I was "Oriel" from 1898 to 1903". Sandes verse proved very popular during the time of the Boer War and was widely anthologised. In 1903, he became a leader writer and reviewer on the Sydney Daily Telegraph and in 1919 reported for that paper at the peace conference. In 1910, Sandes' first novel, Love and the Aeroplane, was published. In his own name and under the pseudonym of "Don Delaney", Sandes was also the author of several short popular novels, which were published between 1910 and 1917. 81pp. Glossy pages, very clean internally.
