[SR: 10747925], Cards, [EAN: 9789892047973], Book, Breezes of Fans (Hand fans, Cockade fans and Fans) Brief Summary The portuguese word «abano», as its earlier form «avano», derives from the latin «vannus» as does «fan» in english. Because abano corresponds in fact to hand fan, an object formed by a fixed panel and a handle, such a word would not relate properly to a folding fan, when this new kind started to appear in Europe, arrived from China, Japan and even Ceylon (Sri Lanka), sometime between the beginning and the middle of the XVIth century. In this work an explanation is attempted to the why, how and when it was found necessary to include in the portuguese language the elu-sive and enigmatic word «leque», in order to define the new object. Although cockade fans had civilian use during the Middle Ages, their presence in religious cerimonies appears today as having been more frequent, named generally «flabella», as some very rare extant examples, such one kept in Tournus and another known as Queen Theodolinda's seem to indicate. But were really cockade fans only used during and after the above mentioned period? The answer to this question is brought to us by an archeologic find in the United Kingdom as shown in these pages. This book results from very careful reading, interpretation and comparison of ma-ny 16th century documents, mostly portuguese and spanish, details of which progres-sively developed into several puzzles, the first of which allowing to identify and describe the portuguese «abanos» used at the table of the Kings of Portugal, John III and D. Catarina, his wife. The doubts and conclusions that are detailed sometimes support old interpretations but also refute mistakes and beliefs that have been perpetuated, some for a very long time and others more recently. Other questions studied, thoroughly documented and discussed are as below: Were the maritime discoveries relevant to the portuguese being almost unanimously accepted as the introductors of the folding fan in Europe, later, 1000, Subjects, 1, Arts & Photography, 2, Biographies & Memoirs, 3, Business & Money, 3248857011, Calendars, 4, Children's Books, 12290, Christian Books & Bibles, 4366, Comics & Graphic Novels, 5, Computers & Technology, 6, Cookbooks, Food & Wine, 48, Crafts, Hobbies & Home, 8975347011, Education & Teaching, 173507, Engineering & Transportation, 301889, Gay & Lesbian, 10, Health, Fitness & Dieting, 9, History, 86, Humor & Entertainment, 10777, Law, 17, Literature & Fiction, 173514, Medical Books, 18, Mystery, Thriller & Suspense, 20, Parenting & Relationships, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 21, Reference, 22, Religion & Spirituality, 23, Romance, 75, Science & Math, 25, Science Fiction & Fantasy, 4736, Self-Help, 26, Sports & Outdoors, 28, Teen & Young Adult, 5267710011, Test Preparation, 27, Travel, 283155, Books<
