ROBERT DARNTON (1939), pionero en el campo de la historia del libro, es titular de la cátedra de Historia Moderna de Europa en la Universidad de Princeton (EE.UU). Robert Darnton presidió la Asociación Americana de Historia (AHA) y fue uno de los fundadores del programa "Gutenberg-e" auspiciado por la Fundación Andrew W. Mellon, programa que nació en 1999 con el propósito de utilizar el prestigio de la AHA para establecer un alto nivel de calidad en la publicación de libros electrónicos, legitimando de esta forma su publicación.
