Es profesor en la Accademia di Architettura de la Università della Svizzera Italiana en Mendrisio, Suiza, y ha sido profesor invitado en diversas universidades de todo el mundo.Entre sus obras más importantes destacan: cubrición del yacimiento arqueológico romano (Chur, Suiza, 1986), capilla de Sogn Benedetg (Sumvitg, Suiza, 1988), viviendas para jubilados (Chur-Masans, Suiza, 1993), termas (Vals, Suiza, 1996), Kunsthaus Bregenz (Bregenz, Austria, 1997), pabellón de Suiza en la Exposición Universal (Hannover, Alemania, 2000), centro de documentación 'Topografía del terror' piezas prefabricadas (Berlín, Alemania, 1997; proyecto interrumpido por el gobierno regional), Kunstmuseum Kolumba (Colonia, Alemania, 2007) y capilla Bruder Klaus (finca de Scheidtweiler, Mechernich, Alemania, 2007).Su obra ha sido recogida en exposiciones y numerosas publicaciones especializadas y en la monografía Peter Zumthor: Works. Buildings and Projects 1979-1997 (Lars Müller, Baden, 1998). Ha recibido el Premio Pritzker de Arquitectura 2009.
