Seit der Konferenz der Vereinten Nationen für Umwelt und Entwicklung (UNCED) 1992 in Rio de Janeiro hat die Verbindung von Umwelt und Entwicklung eine neue Dimension bekommen. Zahlreiche Konventionen zu Klima, Desertifikationsbekämpfung und biologischer Vielfalt fordern eine weltweite Zusammenarbeit in diesem Bereich. In Industrieländern ist umweltfreundliches Konsumverhalten und Umweltbewusstsein wesentlich ausgeprägter als in Entwicklungsländern. Besonders in der Agenda 21, dem globalen Aktionsprogramm für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung, wird der zwingende internationale Aktionsbedarf herausgestellt, umweltbezogene Bildungs- und Kommunikationsaktivitäten auch in den Entwicklungsländern durchzuführen. Welche Faktoren ermöglichen einen effektiven Umweltschutz in Entwicklungsländern? Der Autor Gert Beer stellt nach Auswertung einer qualitativen Analyse die These auf, dass effektiver Naturschutz vor allem dann möglich ist, wenn die lokale Bevölkerung in Planung und Umsetzung der Naturschutzprojekte eingebunden wird.
