This work is perhaps the most important book I have ever written or will ever write, not because the topic is my favorite subject, or because the subject of the Book is my personal hero, but because within these pages we will examine one of the least known or discussed periods in the life of one of the Bible's most important figures. David, the man who would be king, a man after God's own heart, a man of wisdom, a man of courage, a man of purpose and destiny, a man who rose from humble beginnings to a position of great stature, a man of great success and great failure, a man who is a type and shadow of Jesus, and perhaps most importantly a man like you and like me. This book is not written as an historical account of David's life nor does it intend to address the many events in his life or for that matter any of the events that occurred while David was King. In fact this book does not intend to address King David at all, but rather David as a man who would be king. As I read through countless books about countless figures those in scripture and those who are not, I found it interesting that we seem to only be interested in examining the finish product and have little taste for the work in progress, or the process of becoming what we hail as great. Perhaps this is because we have so little appreciation for the process in our own lives we have such a craving for instant success that we try to convince ourselves that our heroes were always heroes, the wise were always wise, the great were always great, however despite how tightly we squint our eyes the light of truth glares through to remind us that that is simply not the case and that the final product we love to exalt as complete is merely a small part of the story and sometime, if not most times, the most significant parts of the story are contained in the parts we often try to overlook. For that matter if what we think is true, that great, that men were always great, that this wise were always wise, that the brave were always brave, what would that mean for us who have not yet arrived at the place that God has called us to, with out the room to move from fearful to brave or from foolish to wise, from weak to strong where would we be, what hope would we have with out the room to grow, to learn, to mature, to try fail and try again, the answer is we would be lost and without hope. But in Christ there is always hope, always a next time, a chance to turn defeat into victory, failure into success, to restore what was lost, heal what has been broken and in that we find the purpose of process and the purpose of this work.
