METHODS OF DEALING WITH THE BRITISH EVIDENCE. Now that the evidence of comparative custom as to the primitive origin and characteristics of the village community is placed fairly before us, it becomes an important question as to the right method of dealing with the British evidence. Clearly it must be re-arranged; for until now no notice has been taken of the race elements, while very great prominence has been given to the dominating force of Roman influence. Rome was a highly centralized and highly civilized power, and long before the appearance of its forces in Britain it had passed through the stage of the village community. According to our evidence it cannot have entered into the English village system at all, and the striking out of such an important factor necessitates a re-examination of the methods of dealing with the British evidence. It is singular how persistent the practice has been to trace back everything in English institutions to Roman influences. It was the invarying object of most of our earlier antiquaries, and in this age the learning and research of a great scholar have revived in double force the old theories. While, however, the judgment which Mr. Freeman passed upon the conclusions of Mr. Coote-a judgment endorsed by Sir Henry Maine-seemed to be confirmed by the absolute silence with which Mr. Coote passed over the evidence as to the survival of the primitive village community in Britain, this institution, in the masterful hands of Mr. Seebohm, has itself been brought within the area of Roman influences. What Jacob Grimm has said of the old attempts to trace the gods, mythic fancies, andpagan rituals of our ancestors to the intrusion of Roman ideas, I am inclined to repeat with reference to these attempts to trace back Books, History~~General, Village-Community~~George-Laurence-Gomme, , , , , , , , , , Kessinger Publishing Company<
