Naturally curious, my observation could not have been more happily employed than on this, the most extraordinary, as well as interesting of human events. If totally unconnected with men of any party, and of course hoping or dreading but little, from the success or failure of their measures, I had then been able to form a judgment, under no influence but that of strong truth, the same reasons will, I trust, at present protect me from the imputation of a partial reporter. I rejoice in the French Revolution, only as it has given birth to the most eloquent production I have read in any language.
