Markham, ON, Canada: Butterworths & Company (Canada) Limited, 1988. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ in. - 9¾ in.Tall. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Chief Justice Bereford rebuked counsel in legal French. The translation reads: 'We want to know if you have anything else to say; for what you have said is all jangle and riot'. And that, as the author of this entertaining book says, means 'stuff and nonsense', Beresford appears in the Year Books, as does Mr Justice Staunton who said to counsel in 1312: 'In support your action you bring forth naught but wind, while he produces the charter of your father; therefore we rule that you reply to the charter'. Mr Hamilton has information about Coke and Ralegh, about excommunication, and ecclesiastical lawyers and Doctors' Commons, described by Dickens as 'a cosey, dosey, old-fashioned, time-forgotten, sleepy-headed little family party'. He deals with forgotten scandals like that of the first QC to be disbarred. This was Edwin James, who was also an MP. He had a considerable practice, but had money difficulties. In 1861 the benchers of the Inner Temple considered allegations taht he had fleeced of £35,000 the young Lord Worsley, that he had obtained £20,000 from a solicitor by false pretences and that he had received £1500 on a promise to go easy in a cross-examination. He fled to Paris and was disbarred. After a sojourn in America, where he was admitted to the New York Bar, he ended his career as an articled clerk to a London solicitor. He survives in the pages of Dickens and Trollope (as Serjeant Stryver in A Tale of Two Cities, and as Mr Chaffenbrass in three Trollope novels). Mr Hamilton has much about F E Smith, and cannot understand why he was ready to support the right of Ulstermen to engge in rebellion against the Liberal Government's Home Rule proposals. When he was made Lord Chancellor after the December 1918 General Election King George V protested, but to no effect, and The Times spoke of his career as a succession of 'remarkable and promiscuous experiences' and referred to his 'fatal fluency of thought and speech'.., Butterworths & Company (Canada) Limited, 1988, Gale ECCO, Print Editions, 2010-06-10.
