Allan Ramsay, one of the greatest of Scottish poets, was the son of a workman in the lead-mines of Lord Hopetoun, who lived in homely fashion on the high mountains that divide Annandale from Clydesdale, in Lanarkshire. In a lonely cottage, whose ruins are still the scene of many a pilgrimage, the subject of this memoir was born on the 15th of October, 1686. Allan was employed in childhood in assisting to wash the ore. He was sent to the parish school, in which institution he was made acquainted with little, if anything, beyond 'the three R's.'
