Atkinson, a Scottish writer and bookseller in Glasgow, born around 1800 garnered some accolades for his work, notably from Sir Walter Scott, and was an active traveler and speaker. He died in 1833, contracting an illness, most likely the result of exertions from his last travel. This volume contains many pieces of poetry, as well as some minstrel style pieces which are set to music. (The music is also printed within). Of note in this regard are several pieces giving the composer to be J.P. Clarke, possibly the noted Canadian musician and composer known for his work in religious music and music teachings in Canada. Clarke, originally from Edinburgh emigrated to Canada in 1834. Other than the bit of research I did, I have no proof that this is the same man but it does seem to fit well. Another piece of music gives John Thomson as composer, who could be the noted Scottish composer, a contemporary of Mendelssohn. Also in this volume is a history of the First Crusade, a lengthy commentary on the consequences of the Holy Wars in Palestine, and several small anecdotes on some of his travels. Continuing to publish as "Irene Moody" throughout and following her second marriage, she busied herself with clubs and philanthropic endeavors, including two terms as chair of the Vancouver Board of School Trustees; service with the British Columbia School Trustees Association; and membership on the advisory council of women to the War Committee of Cabinet during World War I. OCLC 198545996 Shoemaker 8591 Prayers and contemplations printed for a Pennsylvania German audience and prefaced by recommendations from ministers of the Lutheran church and the Reformed Synod. The volume is divided into four parts, each with its own sectional title. Gott ist die reinste Liebe was first published in 1791, as a Catholic devotional; Eckartshausen's later mystical works were taken up by several exoteric groups, including Rosicrucians, and followers of Aleister Crowley's Thelema. Recommended by Lutheran and Reformed ministers of Pennsylvania. Witschel's prayers are in verse, those of Eckerthausen in prose. (Seidensticker and Friedrich, p. 217) PRINTER: CHARLES A. BRUCKMAN was the son of Carl A. Bruckman, a Saxon, and was born in Amsterdam, in the year 1792, whilst his father was on the way emigrating to this country. He learned the trade of printer under his father at Reading. In 1816 he started a Federal German newspaper, and conducted its publication for ten years. He was an earnest advocate for the election of Hon. Joseph Hiester for Governor. Subsequently he was a supporter of General Jackson for President. He died in 1828. AUTHORS: Karl von Eckartshausen (1752 - 1803) was a German Catholic mystic, author, and philosopher, born in Haimhausen, Bavaria. Eckartshausen studied philosophy and civil law in Munich and Ingolstadt. He was the author of Die Wolke über dem Heiligtum, a work of Christian mysticism which was later taken up by occultists. The English translation by Isabelle de Steiger received high acclaim within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, particularly by A. E. Waite. It also caught attention from Aleister Crowley, the founder of Thelema, drawing him to the Order. Von Eckartshausen was acquainted with Johann Georg Schröpfer, an early pioneer of phantasmagoria, and himself experimented with the use of magic lanterns to create "ghost projections" in front of an audience of four or five people. Johann Heinrich Witschel (1769 -1847) was a German pastor, dean in Kattenhochstatt and a member of the Landtag in the Kingdom of Bavaria. He was best known for his literary work, comprising many inspirational writings, poems, prose and a play. His devotional book Morgen- und Abendopfer in Gesängen ran to at least eleven editions and was the most popular devotional book in the time of rationalism. ., Carl M'Williams und Comp, 1822, 2, Jackson. He emigrated to New York at the age of seven. His first book, Golden Darkness, was awarded the Yale Younger Poets Prize. Among his influential anthologies are Master Poems of the English Language, Immortal Poems of the English Language, The Pocket Book of Modern Verse, and the Little Treasury Poetry Series, which were used in colleges and high schools around the U.S. in the 1950s and 1960s. During his lifetime, anthologies he edited sold more than two million copies, a nearly unheard amount for books of poetry. Many of his anthologies are still being republished today. Though a friend and promoter of poets like Dylan Thomas and George Barker, Williams' own poetry is not highly regarded by critics, though he published several volumes during his lifetime, and is not nearly as accomplished as the poetry of his wife, Gene Derwood (1909-1954)., 0, Circa [1880]., [1880].. Good. - A slip of paper, 2-3/8 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide, is inscribed & signed in black ink: "Let us thank God for the Saxon Grit / Robert Collyer". The paper is mounted on a piece of cream-colored card of approximately the same size. The card is unevenly cut & both paper & card are slightly rippled from the mounting. Good. "Saxon Grit" is the title of an 1880 poem by Collyer about the Norman conquest of England, in which the phrase recurs in each verse.Robert Collyer [1823-1912] was an English-born American Unitarian clergyman. He became a Methodist minister in England in 1849. Emigrating to The United States in the following year, he found employment as a hammer maker in Pennsylvania and soon began preaching on Sundays while still employed at the factory. His earnest, rugged, simple style of oratory won him great popularity, but his advocacy for the antislavery cause, then frowned upon by the Methodist authorities, aroused opposition. He was tried for heresy and his license was revoked. Continuing as an independent preacher, he joined the Unitarian Church in 1859. In 1860 he organized and became pastor of the Unity Church, the second Unitarian Church in Chicago. The church grew to become one of the strongest Unitarian churches in the West and Collyer was regarded as one of the foremost pulpit orators in the country. He left Chicago in 1879 and became pastor of the Church of the Messiah [now renamed the Community Church] in New York City. In 1883 he was a featured speaker at the convention of the American Woman Suffrage Association where he spoke movingly about his deceased wife and their struggles over "the woman question"., Circa [1880]., 2.5, Belgium 2007. In 885 AD, the Vikings laid siege to Paris, to which a young monk named Abbo, of the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prs, stood as witness. Later, he came to make a record of what he saw, heard and believed in a verse chronicle, the ÇBella parisiacae urbisÈ. His often stirring account speaks of the relentless and ingenious attacks of the Norsemen, the selfless heroism of the defending Frankish warriors, and the misery and terror of the besieged Parisians. But his canvas is far larger than this single occurrence, for he hints at greater things yet to come, such as the final disintegration of Carolingian rule, the eventual establishment of the Capetian line of monarchs, and the creation of a French Danelaw, namely, Normandy. Ultimately, however, Abbo is not concerned with an impartial narration of events, but rather with salvation through history - of the individual and of the nation of the Franks. The macaronic style of his chronicle very much appealed to the sensibilities of the time, thus ensuring that Abbo's work would endure., English/ Latin, Year2007, Illust. B/W0, Illust. Patrick St. John Cook (born 6 August 1949) is an Australian cartoonist, satirical writer and performer known for his work in The National Times, The Bulletin and on television. Cook was born in Weymouth, England, and emigrated to Australia as a child. He received no formal art training, instead working as a cartoonist and illustrator on several Sydney university newspapers. His friend Bob Ellis got him a job at Nation Review in 1971, where he began his career as an editorial cartoonist. His controversial newspaper cartoons made him a household name, and a court hearing on his cartoon about architect Harry Seidler made front-page news in 1984.[3] He received a number of Walkley Awards for his print cartooning. New York: Collier green cloth damp-damaged at base, front and rear, undated odd volume, part of a set of 30 volumes issued in three sets of ten volumes each, targeted presumably at the emigrant Irish in the United States. The year of issue is not stated, but seems to be, on internal evidence, 1902 (that's the last reference to publications by W.B. Yeats. This volume consists largely of photogravure plates of Irish people and places, monuments and symbols that would appeal to the emigrant. Among the portraits is John Redmond, MP, who was one of the editors of the series. Interesting mainly as a collection of photos, which are generally clean, regardless of the damage mentioned to the boards, and the shakiness of the binding generally (easily repaired if wished).. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall., Collier, 2.5, IDB Productions, 2017-01-01. MP3 CD. New. Reading a book interests some people of all ages. This poem by Edgar A. Guest shows us how to read a book in the best way we can such as taking a little boy in the big chair and read wonderful adventure stories. As both of you will experience oneness and bond closely with each other. Sharing an exciting activity with your little one is worth every moment of fun and delight.

Edgar Albert Guest was a productive British-born American poet who was well known in the first half of the 20th century and became famous as the People's Poet. His poems had an encouraging and positive outlook of daily life.

In 1891, Guest and his family emigrated from England to the United States. After he started at the Detroit Free Press as a copy boy and later a reporter, his first poem came out on December 11, 1898. He then became a naturalized citizen in 1902. For about 40 years, Guest was largely enjoyed all through North America, and his emotional, enthusiastic poems were in the same style as the fine verse of Nick Kenny, who composed collective stanzas in the same years.

From his first circulated poem in the Detroit Free Press up to his death in 1959, Guest wrote a total of 11,000 poems which were published in about 300 newspapers and grouped in over 20 volumes, such as A Heap o' Livin' in1916 and Just Folks in 1917. Guest became the Poet Laureate of Michigan, the only poet awarded with the title.

He became a Freemason in Detroit, where he was a lifelong member of Ashlar Lodge No. 91. In respect of Guest's passion to the Craft, society, and humankind, the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan founded the Edgar A. Guest Award for lodges to be shown to non-Masons within the society who have portrayed remarkable service to the society and their fellows., IDB Productions, 2017-01-01, 6, New York: The author, 1883.
