Not illustrated. 1881 Excerpt: .commencement of the past session special attention was directed to this engagement, and in the result donations in money to the library fund 200 in excess of the usual receipts were obtained. Several friends and colleagues of Mr. Charles Hutton Gregory, C.M.G., Past-President, being desirous of showing their high opinion of his professional career, invited him to sit for his portrait, with a view to its presentation to tho Institution, as a lasting record of personal regard and esteem. A Committee was accordingly formed to receive subscriptions, and the portrait, painted by Mr. John Collier, is now offered to the Institution, by the Subscribers, in terms of the original proposal. In the month of August the President received official intimation from the Privy Council Office that a petition had been presented to the Queen in Council, for tho grant of a Royal Charter of Incorporation, to the Society of Telegraph Engineers, and the President's opinion was invited as to whether the provisions contained in the draft charter were such as to interfere in any way with the rights and privileges of this Institution. As in the unanimous opinion of the Council no just or sufficient reasons existed for tho grant of a second charter within the same profession, they embodied their objections to such a proceeding in a letter, of which the following is a copy: --iEfjc institution of (Kbil limjinrrrs.
