A pub-lover's guide to 242 Irish pubs in and around Boston
Boston is often called the capital of Irish America because of its thriving Irish community, which dates back to colonial times. Boston was the destination for more than 100,000 Irish during the Great Famine of 1845-1850. The Famine Generation moved forward in Boston, defining their place in its society. The influence of Irish culture is reflected in many of Boston's attractions and institutions. The Boston experience is a very Irish one, and would not be complete without a visit to one of its Irish Pubs. Boston's Irish pubs reflect both the richness of Ireland's heritage and the vibrancy of modern Ireland. Much of the best Boston has to offer in dining, music and nightlife can be found in its Irish pubs.
For at least the past dozen years there has been a renaissance of the Irish pub occuring in Boston. It's what inspired us to compile our first guide to the Irish pubs of this great city in 2001. As time has passed since that first guide was published, wonderful, new pubs have continued to pop up in and around Boston. And we've continued to expand the scope of the guide. What was, in it's first incarnation, a guide to 101 Irish pubs in Boston is now, in it's 4th edition, a guide to 242 Irish pubs reaching from Boston down to Cape Cod & The Islands, out to Worcester and up into Southern New Hampshire.
Each pub is profiled in the book with a photograph, its address, phone, hours, etc. information, a description of its ambiance and unique character, menu and cuisine information, entertainment offerings and finally, a longtime reader favorite, the What's In A Name segment, where the colorful and interesting story behind each pub's name is explained.
Additionally, the guide is peppered with photos and write-ups of Irish landmarks around Boston and includes the interesting history of the famed Guinness® brand as well as Smithwick's Irish Ale® and Harp Lager® from the book's sponsor, and step-by-step instructions on how to pour the perfect Guinness pint.
In sum, this is the most comprehensive, interesting and entertaining guide to be found for local Irish pub afficionados. Whether you're a Bostonian or a visitor to the Capital Of Irish America, you're sure to find your perfect pub, your personal patch of Irish heaven, in the pages of this book.
