An Irish Immigrant often in poor health, Father Edward Joseph Flanagan worked first with destitute men, but quickly redirected his efforts to homeless boys, to reach the young when Body, mind, and Spirit could still be nurtured to good health. He accepted all races and religions, and struggled day to day for the support to feed and shelter his boys. In the early days, dormitory-style rooms housed the boys. Education and job training were incorporated into the functioning of the Home. In recent decades, the Home has grown to include girls and converted to family-style living. Boys Town USA sites have been located in communities across the country. Through its training center, national hotline, publications, and videotapes, Boys Town shares its expertise even more widely with youth care professionals and parents to help thousands more troubled young people.
