Arapaho Historical Traditions: Hinono'einoo3itoono (Algonquian Text Society)

Andrew Cowell and Alonzo Moss Sr., editors Little Arapaho textual material has ever been published. The Arapaho traditions chosen for this anthology, Hinono'einooitoono / Arapaho Historical traditions, tell of hunting, scouting, fighting, horse-stealing, capture and escape, friendly encounters between peoples, diplomacy, war, conflict with the United States, and battles with U.S. troops. They also include accounts of vision quests and religious rites, reveal the fate of an Arapaho woman captured by Utes, and describe Arapaho uses of the Medicine Wheel in the Bighorn Mountains. Told by Paul Moss, a highly respected storyteller taught by Yellow Calf (the last traditional Arapaho chief, d. 1935), these twelve texts introduce readers to an immensely rich literature. As works of an oral tradition, they were beyond the reach of those who do not speak the Arapaho language until now. Here, for the first time, these outstanding examples of indigenous North American literature are printed in their original language (in the standard orthography used on the Wind River Reservation) yet made accessible to a wider audience through English translation and a comprehensive body of introductions, notes, commentaries, and an Arapaho-English glossary. Each text also has its own introduction, drawing the reader's attention to topics of historical interest, personal experiences, and poetic form.
