(Alexander McCall Smith, author of The No. 1 Ladies? Detective Agency) Published by iUniverse Inc, December 2004 ISBN 0-595-33091-6 Paperback, 15 x 23 cm, 266 pages Hey, Mr Big! is the self-published story of Jamie Gasking, aged 11, who was killed in an accident at the Falls of Bruar, Perthshire, Scotland on 11 July 2003, just 8 days after he finished primary school. Hey, Mr Big! is an entirely-fund raising venture managed by The Mr Big Group (a non-profit-making community group based in Carr-Bridge, Scotland) with the aid of a Small Community Grant from Moray Badenoch & Strathspey Enterprise, plus matching funding from the Community Economic Development (CED) Programme of the European Union. All proceeds from the sale of Hey, Mr Big! are going to The Jamie Fund for the improvement of facilities for young people in and around Jamie?s home village of Carr-Bridge in the North of Scotland. Hey, Mr Big! is a father?s celebration of one ordinary 11-year old boy who shared his delight with those around him and in doing do touched the lives of many. From the starting point of the holiday diary that Jamie had planned to write that summer, Hey, Mr Big! follows the events of 2003 in a patchwork of words, recollections, letters and pictures ? hopping around in time and place in true Jamie ?that reminds me? fashion. This is not a story of anger or blame. Hey, Mr Big! speaks little of events at the Falls of Bruar on 11 July 2003 ? in the words of the Mr Big website: ?A child should be remembered for the way he lived his life, not for the way that he died.? In the view of Alexander McCall Smith (author of the No. 1 Ladies? Detective Agency) who read the proofs of the book and whose words are quoted on the front cover of Hey, Mr Big!: ?David Gasking has written a memoir which is both moving and positive. It is moving in that it speaks of a father's love for his son - a love that is beautifully described and which comes from the very deepest chambers of the heart. It is positive in that it shows us how to make something glowing and inspiring out of the darkest, bleakest loss. This is a book that enriches our moral landscape. It tells a story that is full of forgiveness and healing." And local novelist Lin Anderson (author of the detective novels Driftnet, Torch and Deadly Code): ?I found reading Mr Big an extraordinary experience. It is a beautifully written testimony to a father/son relationship. I never met Jamie yet felt by the end of the book I knew him well. Spending time with Jamie was an enriching experience. His enthusiasm and interest in the world were wonderfully engaging. A book to be treasured.? From a personal letter to David Gasking from Nick Park of Aardman Animations, creator of Jamie?s favourite characters Wallace & Gromit, as quoted on the back cover of Hey, Mr Big!: "Jamie reminded me a lot of myself at that age - so prolific and enthusiastic about life and with so many hobbies and interests." Media coverage for Hey, Mr Big!, Sarah Johnston, writing in a full-page feature for ?Family Matters? in the Sunday Post, 16 October 2005: ?Even if you never met Jamie Gasking, after only a few hours of reading Hey, Mr Big! you would feel you knew the adventurous boy with the infectious smile and thirst for life ? The book is at times funny, often heartbreaking but the one thing that shines through is that Jamie never wasted a moment of his short life." Margaret Graeme in her review of the book for The Scots Magazine, July 2005: Eleven years is not a long time, but Jamie lived his short life to the full, filling every minute. It was a life cut short, yes, but not lived in vain as his father has demonstrated in this moving, uplifting and unforgettable celebration." *** WIDER RECOGNITION AND OTHER NEWS *** Amongst its varied scrapbook of material, Hey, Mr Big! features the lyrics of a number of original songs written by the author David Gasking for events in and around the local primary school in Carr-Bridge. Since the book was published, two of these songs have won wider recognition in their own right: * The lyrics of the song HOLD ON TO THE SMILES were chosen amongst the Forward Press Top 100 Poets 2005. This song about holding on to the best times - the smiles and the laughter - was written for the children of Carr-Bridge Primary School for their return to school following Jamie's accident and the words were read to the children by one of Jamie's teachers at the remembrance assembly that was held at the start of the new term. The song was subsequently incorporated into the school Christmas pantomime at the end of term, sung by the children themselves. * The song MONKEY BUSINESS was selected as a finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest 2007. This light-hearted song about monkeys and their secrets was written for the children of Carr-Bridge to sing at their School Fun Day on 7 June 2003. Jamie completed primary school at the end of that month and, as things turned out, this was the very last song by his Dad that Jamie was to sing. * THE JAMIE FUND makes its first large contribution to a project for young people, May 2009. In the spring of 2009 an opportunity arose for The Jamie Fund to contribute to a new construction project for the benefit of young people in Jamie's home village of Carr-Bridge. With funding from the National Lottery and other sources, the Parent Council (what we used to call the Parent-Teacher Association) of Carr-Bridge Primary School were able to organise the construction of a new outdoor classroom in the grounds of the school. This will be available not only for the use of pupils during schools hours but also for wider community activities at other times. As a addition to the basic timber structure, money from The Jamie Fund has paid for the addition of a raised decking floor and for cladding of the roof with a felt-and-shingle combination, both of which will help to extend the working lifetime of the building and to enable greater use during the winter months and at times of less than perfect Scottish weather. * The song THE OUTBACK SHUFFLE cowritten by Jamie was picked as a finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest 2009. As described and illustrated with a picture in Hey, Mr Big!, in 2002-03, at the age of 10-11 years old, Jamie wrote his first tune, which he called Australia, as a theme to accompany the kangaroo that he was writing in his spare time at home. Using the original verse and chorus composed by Jamie, his Dad added suitably Jamie-style comic lyrics and a bar-room piano style accompaniment to create a completed song, The Outback Shuffle. In the UK Songwriting Contest 2009, The Outback Shuffle, with Jamie credited as co-writer, was selected as a finalist in both the Open and the Lyrics-only categories, and only narrowly missed out on making it a hat-trick of finalists, with a top-scoring semi-final placing in the highly-competitive Pop category. According to the organisers, the 2009 competition attracted a total of some 6000 entries across 10 categories, and a finalist placing represents the top 2% of all entries.
