A prodigally gifted artist, in her tragically brief career she made advances beyond Cubism into total abstraction. Her Constructivist designs for theatre stripped sets of extraneous d?cor. And her textile designs imbued abstract patterns with a freshness and boldness entirely new to the field. This important monograph reveals and assesses Popova's complete oeuvre for the first time. In the first part of the book, Dmitri V. Sarabianov recreates the artist's background in Russia at the end of the nineteenth century. He goes on to trace the development of her painting and graphic art through her travels to Paris - the successive influences of Van Gogh, Gauguin and C?zanne, and the cubism of Metzinger and Le Fauconnier - and throughout Russia, where she absorbed the vigour and colour of traditional folk and religious art. She became well known at avant-garde exhibitions from 1916 onwards for such innovative works as Painterly Architectonics and Spatial Force Construction, paintings characterized by her preoccupation with the relation between painting and space. In the early days of the Revolution, Popova turned to applied art and productivist work, designing fabrics, clothes and theatrical sets while maintaining a full schedule of teaching at the Institute of Artistic Culture in Moscow. Natalia Adaskina considers Popova as a designer and teacher in the second part of the book.
