Thomas French is employed to help resolve the problem. The landlady proposes evictions, but French believes that it would be better to offer them free passage to America and get in new tenants, who would be better able to afford the rents. This, he reasons, will result in less civil unrest and save money in the long run. However, he reckons without the infamous and brutal Ribbonmen, who resent such an abolition of 'tenant right', believing that it will impoverish the community and weaken their stranglehold upon it. French becomes a marked man and has to be accompanied wherever he goes for fear of violent and bloody reprisal. Into this morass enters Tim, a new young volunteer for the Ribbonmen. His reason for volunteering? Love. He has been forbidden to see his lover, Kitty, by her bullying father, who considers him unworthy of her. Once the heat of the moment passes, however, he fearfully recognises his error and sees this murky, criminal underworld for what it is. Unfortunately for him, he has gone past the point of no return. Stark and bleak this novel may be, but it is very well written, with each character finely crafted and just the right amount of tension employed. As with other good novels, one spends the whole duration of the book hoping against hope that good will prevail and that French, Kitty, Tim and this whole community will somehow find a way out of this mess. Full of twists and turns, this one will wrongfoot you nearly every step of the way, but it is worth the journey.<
