The abdication of Diocletian and Maximian was fuc- ceeded by eighteen years of difcord and confu- fion. The empire was afflicted by five civil wars; and the remainder of the time was not fo much a ftate of tranquiliity as a fufpenfion of arms, between feveral hoftile monarchs, who, viewing each other with an eye of fear and hatred, ftrove toincreafe their refpective forces at theexpenceof their fubjefts. As foon as Diocletian and Maximian had re- charter figned the purple, their ftation, according to the a"'i fitua- rules of the newconftitution, was filled by the two c"ilarii Caefars, Conftantius and Galerius, who imme- tins. diately aflumed the title of Auguftus (i).
