Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert in mehreren Kapiteln ausgewählte Texte des Toleranzgesprächs in Deutschland nach 1945. Große Teile dieses Diskurses macht der Band erstmalig breiten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Herausgewachsen ist die Sammlung aus einem Forschungsprojekt interkultureller Germanistik zum 'Kulturthema Toleranz' (Professor Alois Wierlacher), das von der Volkswagen-Stiftung gefördert wurde. Der Band wendet sich an Lehrende und Lernende und alle, die der Toleranz im Dialog der Menschen und Kulturen eine neue Bedeutung geben wollen. Er kann wie ein Studienbuch gelesen, aber auch zu gezielten Problemfragen konsultiert werden. Die Textsammlung zeigt auf, dass schon bald nach 1945 deutsche Politiker wie Adolf Arndt appelliert haben, die Toleranzidee nicht zu verabschieden, sondern zu erneuern und zu diesem Zweck zu fragen, was denn Toleranz eigentlich ist, worauf sie sich gründet, wodurch sie gefährdet und wie sie verwirklicht wird, weil unsere praktische Toleranzfähigkeit nur dann zunehmen kann, wenn wir auch eine Theorie haben. Noch immer aber gilt die Feststellung Mitscherlichs aus dem Jahre 1974: "Es gibt Kriegsgeschichte, Kriegskunde, Waffenkunde; das sind Lernfächer mit langer Geschichte. Toleranzkunde in auch nur entfernt vergleichbarem Ausmaß gibt es nicht." Darum wendet sich der Band vor allem an diejenigen, die an der Begründung einer fächerübergreifenden, xenologisch und interkulturell orientierten Toleranzforschung und Toleranzlehre interessiert sind.
