Paul Hindemiths Werk weist enzyklopädische Züge auf: er bedachte von Anfang an alle musikalischen Gattungen und realisierte einige seiner musikalischen Gedanken und Projekte nicht im einzelnen, abgeschlossenen Werk, sondern in Werkzyklen und funktional unterschiedlich gebundenen Musiken, die sich voneinander abheben und erst unter dem Aspekt des Gesamtwerkes einander ergänzen. Paul Hindemith selbst hat denn auch eine Gesamtausgabe seiner Werke nicht nur gewünscht, sondern auch projektiert: erhalten ist von ihm eine detaillierte Liste Ungedruckte Stücke für eine etwaige Gesamtausgabe. In die im Neustich vorgelegte Gesamtausgabe aufgenommen werden alle vollständigen Werke in allen vorliegenden Fassungen. Entwürfe und Fragmente von Werken werden im Anhang des entsprechenden Bandes veröffentlicht, Skizzen im Kritischen Bericht und in der Einleitung des Bandbearbeiters ausgewertet. Jeder Band enthält das Vorwort der Herausgeber der Gesamtausgabe, Kurt von Fischer und Ludwig Finscher, eine Einleitung des Bandbearbeiters, die über Entstehungs- und Wirkungsgeschichte informiert, authentische Angaben zur Aufführungspraxis macht und erhaltene Einspielungen der Werke durch Paul Hindemith selbst diskutiert, sowie den Kritischen Bericht. Die Hindemith-Gesamtausgabe ist eine kritische, wissenschaftlich fundierte Edition, die zugleich den Bedürfnissen der musikalischen Praxis Rechnung trägt. Sie wird auch schon durch die zahlreichen Erstveröffentlichungen von Werken Paul Hindemiths der Hindemith-Forschung eine neue Basis bieten und der musikalischen Praxis neues, philologisch abgesichertes Material zur Verfügung stellen.
