This book deals with the new way of looking at Informal waste Collectors in urban space. They are seen as contributors to the sustainability of the urban environment. Chapter 1 introduces and also justifies the importance of integrating informal waste collectors into a waste management system as a possible strategy to reduce the volume of solid waste. It also suggests a strategy for the urban poor to make a living. Chapter 2 looks at the literature on informal waste collectors in developing countries such as Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Egypt, Costa Rica and South Africa.Chapter 3 deals with the research methodology and outlines the data collection process, data sources and the methods used for data analysis. The research therefore involves a threefold approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative information methods. Chapter 4 provides details on data analysis and the research findings. Chapter 5 relates the results of the research, a synthesis of the findings and recommendations for the future. Chapter 6 presents the conclusions reached through this research project.
