Von 2003 bis 2008 war er Fellow am Max-Weber-Kolleg in Erfurt. Er nahm verschiedenste Gastprofessuren in den USA wahr. Brugger wurde nach dem Studium von Rechtswissenschaft, Philosophie und Soziologie mit beiden rechtswissenschaftlichen Examina 1980 in Tubingen zum Dr. iur. promoviert und hat sich dort 1986 habilitiert. Bereits 1981 erwarb er einen LL.M. an der University of California, Berkeley. Stephan Kirste ist seit 2012 Universitatsprofessor an der Universitat Salzburg und Inhaber eines Lehrstuhls fur Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie in der dortigen Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultat. Vorige Stationen waren: 2008-2012: Dekan an der Fakultat fur Vergleichende Staats- und Rechtswissenschaften an der Deutschsprachigen Andrassy Gyula Universitat Budapest 2006-2012: apl.
