Whereabouts: Notes on Being a Foreigner

Prose by the noted translator of Borges and Neruda who, on his own, has a fairly hollow personality to offer. Banality recurs throughout, with observations such as "to be a foreigner is not, after all, a question of domicile, but of temperament." Here we learn that "the landscapes of childhood are irreplaceable." Throughout Reid's rueful cliches, the best parts are quotations from other writers, such as this one by Nabokov: "While a badly written book is a blunder, a bad translation is a crime." The author mentions briefly the brouhaha surrounding the discovery of the fact that he fudged some data to "fictionalize" essays sold as reportage to The New Yorker. He still apparently cannot see why it should bother anyone if he invents what he claims is true. It is ironic that Reid should have been accused of invention, when that is what this book of essays so direly lacks; Reid's listing of his various domiciles over the years, from New York to Spain to London, is soporific. Why he imagines that this should be of public concern is another small, irritating puzzle in this unsatisfying volume. The essays that caused the uproar at The New Yorker, a mini lit-crit version of Watergate, are no better. They inform us that "death is a reduction." So is coming to these essays after being familiar with Reid's diligent work as translator from the Spanish. Vague, banal, and gloomy - like a drizzly November day. (Kirkus Reviews)
