John Duckworths involvement with the development of radar, experiences with air and sea craft and the secrecy surrounding his role are given to us on a personal level with wisdom, maturity and often humour. The author worked throughout the war as a civilian on radar research and field work, including the first ever installation of radar on a merchant ship to enable it to defend convoys against German bombers. He returned to nuclear physics research at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell, but soon realised that he preferred scientific project development work, rather than pure research and therefore he joined Ferranti Ltd, where he led the the team developing the guidance and control system of the bloodhound ground to air guided weapon which was adopted by the United Kingdom and a number of foreign countries. In 1955 the Government published a White Paper announcing the first civil nuclear power programme and the then nationalised electriicity industry appointed Mr Duckworth as the executive responsible for implementation of this multi-million pound programme. The electricity industry was totally reorganised in 1960, and then Mr Duckworth was appointed Managing Director of The National Research Development Corporation.
