The Memoirs of Elisabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun - Paperback

ISBN: 0948491388

[SR: 529295], Paperback, [EAN: 9780948491382], Camden Press, Camden Press, Book, [PU: Camden Press], 1989-05-25, Camden Press, In 1778, at the age of 23, the artist Elisabeth Vigee-Le-Brun painted her first portrait of Queen Marie Antoinette. Eleven years later, fearful for her life, she fled France on the eve of the French Revolution. Disguised as a peasant with her six year old daughter in tow, she embarked on a working voyage round the courts of Europe, painting the rich, clever, noble and beautiful of her day. These memoirs, written in the 1830s, are a gossipy account of the people she met and the places she visited. The discomfort of bad roads, the difficulty of finding quiet lodgings, the impossibility of getting a good meal, super-heated homes of the Russian upper classes, her distaste for the silent English Sunday and the equally silent English upper classes, and her tactful descriptions of the crazier of Europe's royalty, are revealing social documents. Her privileged position as painter to the great reveals Lady Hamilton in Naples tucking a rose in her hair after receiving a love letter from Lord Nelson; Mme Dubarry presented with her guillotined lover's head; a Russian aristocrat spooning diamonds into bowls for his dinner guests., 67, Biography, 758890, Artists, Architects & Photographers, 268064, British Royalty, 659896, Business & Finance, 267972, Children's & Young Adult, 759266, Essays, Journals & Letters, 268003, Film, Television & Music, 268077, Gay & Lesbian, 268021, Historical, 268039, Holocaust, 759214, Medical, Legal & Social Sciences, 267954, Novelists, Poets & Playwrights, 268041, Political, 268063, Reference, 758858, Religious, 758860, Science, Mathematics & Technology, 268075, Social & Health Issues, 268084, Sport, 758864, Theatre & Performance Art, 680833011, Tragic Life Stories, 759224, True Crime, 758862, War & Espionage, 268083, Women, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books
