First Edition, First Printing. 19 pp. text + 129 photographic images mostly in color by Cindy Sherman. Essays by Peter Schjeldahl and Lisa Phillips. SIGNED/INSCRIBED by Cindy Sherman. BOOK CONDITION: Very Good Plus; a tight, cean copy with moderate shelf wear and handling to covers. Overall a solid, clean copy. SIGNED. Among the most influential artists of the last twenty-five years, Cindy Sherman made her name with the Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980), in which she enacted a seemingly unending series of b-movie cliches--in the process launching endless seminar discussions on the construction of femininity in and through popular culture. Her next series, Centerfolds (1981) and Fashion (1983–84) continued her investigation of the construction of feminine stereotypes. If these images spurred further reflection on notions of gender, genre, and feminine beauty, later series explored viewers' relation to the abject, or repulsive, especially with relation to waste, decay, bodily fluids and such. More seminar discussions ensued. Around the time these discussions were beginning to peak, the Whitney Museum in New York mounted Sherman's first major retrospective. The catalogue contains a sampling of her work to date plus essays by the show's curator, Lisa Phillips, and critic Peter Schjeldahl (currently the New Yorker's art writer). , Whitney Museum of Art, 1987

[SR: 1711671], Paperback, [EAN: 9780874270556], Whitney Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of Art, Book, [PU: Whitney Museum of Art], Whitney Museum of Art, This volume presents extensive groups of works from nearly all of Cindy Sherman's creative phases. The principle theme in Sherman's oeuvre is the staging of female role models. The American artist relies on stereotypes inscribed on our collective visual memory in a world saturated with media. In this roleplay with costumes, masks and prostheses, during which her own identity almost completely disappears, Sherman (born 1954) walks a fine line between staging and parody in her scrutiny of clichés and fears. The artist became well known for her multipart photo series Untitled Film Stills (1977-80), in which she embodies female characters from fictitious movie scenes from the 1950s. Her artistic principle has essentially not changed much since. In her later series with large-format color photographs, Sherman takes up such themes as fashion photography, fairytale figures, horror scenes and high-society ladies., 1104, Individual Artists, 8947733011, Artists' Books, 8947734011, Essays, 8947735011, Monographs, 1, Arts & Photography, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 468220, Business & Finance, 468226, Communication & Journalism, 468204, Computer Science, 468224, Education, 468212, Engineering, 468206, Humanities, 468222, Law, 468228, Medicine & Health Sciences, 684283011, Reference, 468216, Science & Mathematics, 468214, Social Sciences, 684300011, Test Prep & Study Guides, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books
