This traces their troubled history and the changing culture of these Native Americans by twelve contributors each with a specialized point of view, and examines the life of the Cherokees, their attachment to their land, the hostilities of the eighteenth-century, and the later rapid economic progress of the tribes during the early nineteenth century, as well as the forced removal of the Cherokees from their territory, and their modern-day condition at time of printing. Described here is the bitter post-removal factionalism between the Old Settlers and the Treaty party that led to the murder of the Ridges and their Connecticut-educated kinsman Elias Boudinot, editor of the 'Cherokee Phoenix'. Also portrayed in this study are the pseudo-Cherokee charlatan William A. Bowles, and Will Thomas, who devoted many frustrated years to lobbying in Washington in behalf of the Cherokees' financial claims. The concluding chapters of the book deal with contemporary issues of both Eastern and Western Cherokees, and are especially significant.)<
