Using details from historical potlatches, and skillfully weaving in legends about animals and spirits - Raven, Grizzly Bear, Salmon, Frog - Mary Beck creates a compelling account of the potlatch ceremony and its place in a community's celebration of life, death, and continuity., Alaska Northwest Books, 1993, 3, Toronto: Irwin Publishing, 1975. 144 pp. Lightly rubbed at the corners with a flat uncreased spine; previous owner's name inside. Increased settlement had upset the delicate balance of their nomadic way of life and they were being indiscriminately slaughtered by the whites and Micmac - Mi'kmaq - fur-trade allies...Evidence suggests that about this time three or four hundred Beothuk were herded onto a point of land near their favourite sealing site and shot down, culled like deer.... It started when a handful of protesters from the nearby Six Nations Reserve walked onto Douglas Creek Estates in Caledonia, Ontario, then a residential subdivision under construction, and blocked workers from entering. They said the land was theirs and no one could build there. For whatever reason, the Ontario Provincial Police did very little to defuse the situation and nothing at all to end it; in refusing to do anything about the Native occupation, they, along with the Liberal politicians, completely failed the people of the area. The standoff went on for years. The cops did nothing. The natives continued their occupation. And the problems have not gone away, nor will they. Formerly known as the Papago, the people, acting as a nation in 1986, voted to change the colonial applied name, Papago, to their true name, Tohono O'odham, a name literally meaning "desert people." Living within a region the Spanish termed Pimeria Alta, the Tohono O'odham, from the time of Spanish Jesuit Kino's first missionary efforts in the late 1680s, have been witness to numerous governmental, philosophical, and religious intrusions. Yet throughout, they have adapted and survived. Today the Tohono O'odham Nation occupies the second largest land reserve in the United States, covering more than 2.8 million acres. The images in this volume date largely between 1870 and 1950, a period that documents great change in Tohono O'odham traditions, culture, and identity., Arcadia Publishing, 2008-04, 0, University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, 1998, US first edition, paper covers, 6 x 9, VG condition, 205 pages, map, notes, illus., bibliog., index.------------------------------From 1860 to 1890 the United States military engaged in war after war with the indigenous peoples of the West. Although numerous treaties recognized the rights of individual tribes, the U.S. government often did nothing to stop settlers from expanding into Indian territory. Some Indians fled, and others attempted to coexist with the newcomers, but many fought against the loss of homelands and traditional ways of life. Superior numbers, organization, and technology benefited the United States, yet Indian resistance was often skillful, heroic, and tenacious. This informative work serves as a guide to the battlefields and fits the episodes into the larger historical drama.--------------------------------------------------------- John D. McDermott, who has spent a lifetime researching the events, discusses the equipment, organization, and lifeways of the combatants. He explains circumstances underlying the encounters and analyzes the significance of events. This detailed guide also leads students, tourists, and history buffs to monuments, parks, museums, and other sources of information about the wars., 0<
