U.S.A.: Mcgill Queens Univ Pr, 1998 There Were A Few World Events That Were Skipped Over In School, Even Though They Were Spoken Of By Family Members Or Mentioned In Novels. One Was The Spanish-American War, Which Of Course Turned Out To Have Communists In It, And Was Therefore Too Embarrassing To Talk About For Some Decades. The Other Was The Boer War. I Just Looked It Up In Wikipedia: No Communists, Just Dutch Settlers Versus Zulus Followed By The British Empire Versus Settlers. Now I Understand The Title, "Painting The Map Red." In My Day, It Was Always Pink For The Commonwealth But Red Might Be More Suitable. For Some Reason, Canada Was Very Enthusiastic About Getting Involved. Here Is A Bit Of Info From Fred Stenson Whose Book, The Great Karoo, Which I Have Been Meaning To Read, Explains: " The Boer Was Said To Be About Democratic Rights For Non-South African Workers, But It Was Really About The Value Of The Rand Gold Fields And The Fear That This Wealth Might Fall Under The Control Of Germany." This Book Was Published Jointly By Mcgill University And The University Of Natal And The Canadian War Museum. Includes B/W Photos And Maps. Looks Like It Is Definitely Worth A Read! As New Condition, First Canadian Paperback Edition., Mcgill Queens Univ Pr, 1998

Painting the Map Red - new book

ISBN: 9780773517509

ID: 9780773517509

Painting the Map Red: Paperback: McGill-Queen's University Press: 9780773517509: 01 Feb 1993: This text examines Canada's involvement in the Anglo-Boer War and the effect on Canada, from pre-war debate on the wisdom of Canadian participation through to soldier's experiences in the field to public's perception of the war and how it altered Canadian opinion, politics and military development. Painting the Map Red is based on extensive research into public and private papers from printed and manuscript sources in both Canada and Britain. Carman Miller attempts to explain why men volunteered for service in this distant conflict despite the rancorous pre-war debate on the wisdom of Canadian participation. He examines the difficulties of leading citizen soldiers and compares the differing styles of leadership. He also reveals how the soldiers' experiences in the field and the public's perceptions of the war altered Canadian opinion, politics, and military development. Title:

Painting the Map Red

ISBN:

In October 1899, before the outbreak of the war in South Africa, Sam Hughes, the maverick Conservative imperialist, predicted ominously that the map of Africa would be painted Empire red only through the shedding of blood. By the time the Anglo-Boer War ended in May 1902, 7,368 young soldiers and 16 nurses had sailed from Canada for South Africa. About 270 died there, killed in battle or by disease. For almost three years the Canadian public was mesmerized by the war. It affected trade, industry, transportation, fashion, discourse, literature, graphics, and music.
