"In Russia's Cotton Workers and the New Economic Policy Chris Ward uses a wide range of published and unpublished Soviet sources to examine key aspects of life on the shop floor of the Russian cotton mill in the 1920s. During the 1920s the Bolshevik regime believed that fundamental changes were necessary in thefactories if consumer demand was to be satisfied and the exchange of goodsbetween town and country re-etablished. Yet, as Chris Ward convincingly argues, attemts by the state to rationalise production, introduce Taylorism and mobilise or discipline the workforce met with limited success in the cotton mills. 'Russia's Cotton Workers and the New Economic Policy' provides for the first time a realistic understanding of the relationship between worker, state policy and technology in Russia in the 1920s. It alsomakes an important contribution to debates over the viability of the New Economic Pölicy and the rise of Stalinism.
