Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., 1998. First edition. Hardcover. New. 15 x 23 cm. Canada and Canadians are currently at crossroads. Their hard-earned self-identity as constituting a distinct people, a nation-state in the political sense of the term, is now facing serious competition from other, often more basic, senses of individuals and collective identity based on language, culture, territory, religion, gender, ethnicity, social class, and religion. Whether or not Canada survives and thrives as a nation-state into the twenty-first century will depend largely on the outcome of this struggle over competing identities. If the past is an indication of the future, the ten chapters of this rather unorthodox book lead us to the conclusion that Canadians will confront and overcome, yet once again, this age-old challenge with imagination and determination. The structure of this book, which combines chapters on regions, provinces, time periods and themes with a general overview was quite deliberate. This book was conceived primarily for non-Canadian students, involved in Canadian studies, involved in Canadian studies programmes, who are seeking historical background on a wide-range of topics. Most students come to the study of Canada through their interest in contemporary Canadian literature, visual arts, music, sociology, geography, political science, government policy, trade or economics. Most of these disciplines or topics take for granted that their students possess a general basic knowledge of Canada`s past. Their practitioners offer their analyses and draw conclusions which often do not make much sense to the non-Canadian students who lack a basic knowledge of Canada`s past. The editors of this book felt that this problem could be overcome if we offered Indian students interested in Canadian studies a book on Canadian history. All of the contributors are from Canada and are well known specialists in their respective sub-fields of Canadian history. Each of them presents, from his or her particular vantage point, a comprehensive overview of their chosen subject matters. Printed Pages: 542., Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. This is another paragraph Review: Peter Ustinov was not perhaps the most obvious traveller to send in the footsteps of Mark Twain, but that was the decision that Channel Four made.Mark Twain's Following the Equator is a travel book of the heyday of colonial empire--he visited Fiji and India, Australia and South Africa, and everywhere found old ways of life in retreat and the sun never setting on the British Empire. Ustinov and his camera crew find, as might be expected, something rather different-- old ways of life being reclaimed with 20th-century tweakings and the Empire gone, yet its legacy constantly and bizarrely present, whether in the shape of the English language or of stranded eccentrics. This is also a book about the practical logistics of moving an elderly celebrity around the world--Waldman talks in a way that Ustinov himself would never do about his hard-working attitude and occasionally failing health. What might have been a rather catchpenny spin-off from a competent but unexciting travel series becomes something rather more--Ustinov's love of good talk takes him to Maoris recovering their culture of facial tattoos, to surviving Maharajahs in their palaces and to Nelson Mandela., Simon Schuster, 5, Like New.. 'In this sequel to their first book, The Customer Comes Second , the authors present the ongoing metamorphosis of their company, Rosenbluth Travel, while surveying other innovative companies identified in Robert Levening and Milton Moskowitz's The 100 Best Companies To Work for in America. The result is an internal examination of corporate culture that challenges the notion that corporations must be heartlessly competitive to succeed. The authors explain how Rosenbluth Travel reinvented itself based on an agrarian model, and though their discussion recalls work already done by Stephen Covey (e.g., The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People), this book is valuable in admitting to the warts, wrinkles, and scars that can arise with the effort to institute change.'-- Steven Silkunas, Library Journal, 1998., 5, Cambridge, England: Cambridge University Press, 1998. ix, + 250pp. Book clean, square. "Intellectual disability is a socially constructed phenomenon that varies in important respects cross-culturally. This collection of original essays examines the classification of people as competent and incompetent in the United States, England, Wales, Greece, Greenland, Uganda and Belize. The contributors, anthropologists and sociologists, argue that it is time for a new understanding of intellectual disability . . .
